Unknown gunmen kill government soldier in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Unknown gunmen targeted on Friday at night a patrol of the Syrian government forces in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, killing a soldier and wounding others.

A military source in the government forces told North Press unidentified attackers riding a motorcycle opened fire on a joint patrol of military security and criminal police of the government forces in the outskirts of the town of al-Mayadin in the southeast of Deir ez-Zor.

The source added the attack resulted in the killing of Ali al-Jarad,35, a member of the military security from the al-Joura neighborhood in Deir ez-Zor, as well as the injury of two others.

The injured soldiers were transferred to the al-Fayha Hospital in al-Mayadin for treatment, the source said.

The source pointed out the government forces blocked roads to the neighborhoods near the scene of the attack and arrested eight civilians believed to be connected to the attack.

Deir ez-Zor Governorate usually witnesses attacks launched by unknown gunmen who target the government forces. Such attacks are occasionally claimed by the Islamic State group (ISIS) as it is heavily present in the Syrian Desert.
