Family with Northland roots loses ‘dream home’ in Nebraska tornado

ELKHORN, Neb. (Northern News Now) - Residents of the Midwest are dealing with disaster after devastating tornadoes on Friday.

One family with long-standing ties to the Two Harbors area lost their dream home in a matter of minutes.

Jason and Emily Sunday captured video moments before a tornado struck their house in Elkhorn Nebraska, only three weeks after moving into the home.

The family lived in Two Harbors from 2013-2021 before moving to Nebraska.

According to Jason, the couple then ran to a basement bathroom for shelter from the storm.

As the tornado moved toward their house the natural disaster began to sound like a freight train.

They were only in that bathroom for about two minutes before the tornado passed.

“(it’s) The scare-dest I’ve ever been in my life by far. You know I’ve been overseas three times in Iraq, a couple of times in Afghanistan for prior service, completely helpless. When the roof was completely ripped off that was the loudest sound,” said Jason.

Jason then tried to describe what he saw after leaving the bathroom.

“When we walked out of the bathroom and I could see daylight. I pretty much lost it, I find myself to be a pretty tough guy and can kind of hold myself together but when your dream home, you walk out and you have no roof and you look around and it’s like completely gone, it’s pretty devastating,” said Sunday.

Sunday and his family have found a place to stay in Nebraska as they plan to rebuild their dream home in the same spot.
