Ships of up to 10,000 dwt now able to reach Chongqing

Ships of up to 10,000 dwt are now able to reach the world’s largest municipality. Last week saw the Innovation 5, carrying more than 5,000 tonnes of soy beans, dock at Jiangjin Luohuang Port in southwest China’s Chongqing municipality, becoming the first 10,000 dwt class vessel to travel in the upper reaches of the Yangtze, China’s longest river.

The sea-going ship had started its journey at Ningbo-Zhoushan port, passing through the Three Gorges Dam en route to Chongqing. The vessel is 130 m long with a registered dwt of 9,832 dwt, and a design draft of 6.1 m.

Chongqing is a sprawling municipality at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers in southwestern China with a population of more than 30m people.
