32 new physicians hired in first half of 2024: Mid-year update on physician hiring
CANADA, July 24 - PEI gains momentum in the first half of 2024 with 32 new physician hires, bringing valuable expertise and enhancing medical care for Islanders.
Between January 1 and June 30, 2024, PEI signed agreements with 32 new physicians; 15 of those physicians have already started practicing; 13 others will start practicing in the second half of 2024; three signed to begin in 2025; and another physician will start in 2026.

While 12 physicians have moved on due to various reasons (7 retirements, 2 deaths, 1 transitioned practices, 2 resignations), the province is pleased to report a net gain of 20 physicians so far for this year. This positive growth underscores the province’s commitment to improving healthcare access for all residents of PEI.
With 11 new family physicians coming to PEI, their focus will be on reducing the patient registry over the coming months.
The patient medical home model has been a strong incentive for new recruits, complemented by opportunities from the Medical School, system-wide electronic health records, and the appealing lifestyle that Prince Edward Island offers.
